Avonte Campinha-Bacote is the founding member of Campinha Bacote LLC. He focuses his practice on all types of civil litigation, including contract disputes, employment law, and entertainment law.  Avonte received his law degree from The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law and received his BA in Economics and Spanish from Denison University.

While in law school, Avonte was a member of the Ohio State Law Journal (Law Review) and served on the Executive Board of the Student Bar Association. Avonte also participated in the Moot Court program where he traveled competitively on a Moot Court team finishing as a Top Ten Best Oralist in the National Labor & Employment Competition. He was also selected to represent his school in the regional ABA Mediation Competition after placing second in the school's intra-lawschool mediation competition.

Prior to forming CB Law, Avonte served as general counsel for Transcultural C.A.R.E. Associates where he represented the company in federal copyright litigation, advised and counseled the President, and worked with outside counsel to handle a variety of matters. Prior to his employment at Transcultural C.A.R.E., Avonte worked at Thompson Hine LLP, one of the nation's largest law firms. While at Thompson Hine, Avonte worked in the Business Litigation practice group, and also had the honor of being selected to serve on Barack Obama's 2008 Ohio Legal Team. Avonte has also served as a court-appointed mediator for the Franklin County Court System and has been a law clerk for various Judges in Ohio. Avonte is also fluent in Spanish.

Avonte has been selected as a Rising Star by Ohio Super Lawyer magazine every year he has been eligible. This is an honor given only to the top 2.5% of the lawyers in Ohio who are 40 or younger, or who have been practicing for ten years or less.

Representative Matters 

Avonte has personally represented a wide range of clients, including reality TV stars, celebrities and models, professional MMA fighters (including the current Featherweight Champion of the World), well-known YouTube personalities, a well-known oceanographer, small businesses, disabled persons, and many more. Avonte has also sat first chair in a federal jury trial and represented clients in federal courts across the nation, including Alaska, California, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, and Texas. A non-exhaustive list of some of his recent successes include:

  • Tried case and obtained a favorable verdict (acquittal) for 4 YouTube Celebrities who were arrested in connection with an ATM prank. Court found their conduct protected by the First Amendment.
  • Rachel Timoneri v. NorthSteppe Realty, Inc., 2016 Ohio App. LEXIS 3752 (Ohio Ct. App., Franklin County Sept. 20, 2016) (affirming one of the largest awards of attorney fees in the State of Ohio)
  • Obtained another favorable verdict (acquittal) for a YouTube Celebrity who was arrested in connection with an epic Pee Prank. Court again found his conduct to be protected by the First Amendment.
  • Obtained a $267,643.75 federal jury verdict in Akron, Ohio against a multi-million dollar airline company on claims involving retaliation based upon gender discrimination. Defense called 17 witnesses, Plaintiff called one (the Plaintiff). Regardless, the jury rendered a unanimous verdict, which included punitive damages 
  • Created new case law and precedent under the Americans With Disabilities Act: first case in the country to apply vicarious liability to Title III of the ADA; Christopher Cooley v. Valero Energy Corporation, et al., 2012 U.S. Dist. LEXIS 40291 (S.D. Ohio 2012) (defeating two motions for summary judgment and a motion to dismiss)
  • Successfully argued and defeated a motion for summary judgment before a Federal District Court involving the issue of "fair use" as it applies to copyright infringement; Campinha-Bacote v. Rearden, 2011 U.S. Dist. LEXIS 38446 (D. Alaska 2011)
  • Successfully argued a defeated a motion to dismiss before a Federal District Court regarding Eleventh Amendment sovereign immunity as it applies to state officials for infringing on a copyright
  • Obtained multiple personal injury settlements for policy limits, the most recent of which was for $300,000
  • Successfully prosecuted numerous federal cases for clients alleging copyright infringement
  • Obtained favorable results in the defense of numerous traffic offenders against the State of Ohio
